INDIVIDUALS required to submit a self-assessment tax return to HMRC are being urged to act now and beat the last-minute rush.

Here at JF Hornby & Co, we file thousands of tax returns on behalf of our clients, taking the pain out of what can be a daunting process.

And we’re encouraging our customers to take action rather than putting themselves under undue pressure in the New Year.

Tom Southward, a divisional director at JF Hornby said: “Our entire team is geared up to work for as long as it takes to submit returns on behalf of our valued clients.

“We understand that tax returns can be a distraction from running a business – and therefore can fall to the bottom of many people’s to-do lists.

“But we would urge all customers to give this matter their timely attention and help us to help them by supplying the relevant information at their earliest convenience.

“We will always do everything in our power to ensure returns are filed on time, but the HMRC deadline is a hard and inflexible one – so please don’t leave matters until the eleventh hour.”

Self Assessment tax returns must be filed before the 31 January 2025.

More than 3.5 million have already beaten the clock and submitted their returns. HMRC is reminding others that completing their Self Assessment early means they can avoid any last-minute panic plus they will know what they owe sooner and can budget.

More than 12 million people need to file a tax return for the 2023 to 2024 tax year and pay any tax owed by the 31 January 2025 deadline.

Last year, over the three-day festive period, 25,769 individuals submitted their tax return nationally, an increase compared to the same period last year, with 8,876 filing on Christmas Eve and 12,136 on Boxing Day. The peak time was between 12:00 and 12:59 on Boxing Day, when 1,121 returns were received by HMRC.

Tom said: “The festive period should be about great food, TV, family time and games – and certainly not a time to be pre-occupied by taxes. There’s a way to avoid this – by taking action now!”

Anyone who is new to Self Assessment needs to register to receive their Unique Taxpayer Reference before they can send a tax return for the 2023 to 2024 tax year.
