HMRC has launched a new online PAYE service, which it says will give 35 million workers more control over their tax affairs.
The tax authority says the service will make it simpler and easier for people to check and update their income, allowances, reliefs and expenses. It will be available via their Personal Tax Account or through the HMRC app.
This development forms part of HMRC’s Transformation Roadmap, which sets out ambitious plans to become a digital-first organisation by 2030, with 90% of customer interactions taking place online.

Welcome change: Paul Hornby believes we need a modern HMRC –
HMRC says its modernisation plans, which include introducing new AI technologies and working with third parties and intermediaries, will make it easier for taxpayers and businesses to engage with the system.
The digital-first approach will see HMRC automate tax wherever possible and expand self-serve options across a range of tax regimes.
In addition, taxpayers liable for the High Income Child Benefit Charge (HICBC) will no longer need to register for self-assessment.
Paul Hornby, Managing Director of JF Hornby & Co, said: “The changes being made by HMRC are to be welcomed. We need a modern, fit-for-purpose taxation system so the latest developments are a step in the right direction.
“The team at JF Hornby & Co are fully up to date with all digital taxation and accounting platforms – and we’re here to make the complex simple. We’re only ever a phone call away.”
