A CAMPAIGN by St Mary’s Hospice which encourages businesses in the area to become a ‘Compassionate Company’ has been supported by JF Hornby and Co.

We are delighted to announce we have become one of a number of local businesses to pledge our support to the hospice as part of its new initiative.

This year, St Mary’s celebrates its 35th anniversary and is trying to get at least 35 companies to pledge a minimum of £35 a month for the next 35 months.

Asset: St Mary’s Hospice

Victoria Thompson, a chartered accountant at JF Hornby & Co, said: “The hospice is a fantastic local facility with a wonderful team who work 365 days a year to deliver vital services to our community.

“The compassion and care afforded to people when they need it most is second to none, so when we were approached about becoming a Compassionate Company, it was a very easy decision.

“I’d encourage as many businesses as possible to get involved in this scheme – £35 a month is not a great deal of money, but a huge difference will be made if we all get behind this programme and sign up.”

St Mary’s Hospice covers a huge swathe of south Cumbria – delivering all of its services for free.

Despite delivering such crucial community services, the hospice only receives one-fifth of its funding from the NHS, which means that the care of 8 out of 10 patients is funded by voluntary donations from the community.

Corporate donors are increasingly important to the hospice, as running costs continue to increase.

Annabelle Holloway, Corporate Partnerships manager at St Mary’s Hospice, said: “Our growing network of business supporters are a hugely valued part of the St Mary’s community.

“Along with our wider network of valued fundraisers, they allow us to carry out our vital work at the hospice and in the community.

“I would like to thank JF Hornby & Co for signing up to our Compassionate Companies campaign – it would be wonderful if the many businesses they work with choose to follow suit.”
