RAINY days are a thing of the past at a community radio station thanks to ongoing support from J F Hornby & Co.

Since becoming sponsors of the daily weather forecast on Cando FM, station chiefs say the partnership has helped secure a vital public service while strengthening community broadcasting across Barrow, Dalton and Ulverston.

Paul Hornby, Managing Director at J F Hornby & Co, said supporting the station was about backing something which has genuine local impact. “Cando FM plays an important role in keeping people connected to what’s happening locally,” he added.

“Sponsoring the weather forecast is a practical way for us to support a trusted local service while helping the station continue its wider work with volunteers, young people and community groups.”

Cando FM is the licensed community radio station for the area, broadcasting on FM and online to an estimated 120,000 residents across South Cumbria and North Lancashire, with between 6,000 and 8,000 weekly listeners. Its digital platforms generate around 50,000 social media impressions each month.

The J F Hornby & Co Weather Report has become one of the station’s most recognisable daily features, sitting alongside more than 2,000 hours of local programming produced each year. It is played more than 8,700 times a year.

Station manager Jonny Williams said the sponsorship had a lasting effect beyond the forecast itself.

He added: “Support from J F Hornby & Co enables us to maintain a reliable daily weather service and reinvest directly into training, volunteer development and community projects.

“It strengthens our ability to amplify local voices and deliver high-quality community broadcasting across Furness.”

The station works with more than 45 volunteers and runs youth radio clubs in eight schools, giving young people practical experience in broadcasting, journalism and media production.
