Payroll team expands as furlough extended in second UK lockdown

November 06, 2020

THE payroll department of a leading accountancy firm has doubled in size - with the new team in place just in time to ensure businesses affected by the UK’s second national lockdown are supported.

Staff at JF Hornby worked around the clock to ensure companies left with no option but to furlough their team members had the help they needed to navigate the government’s Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme.

The initiative, better known as the Furlough Scheme, was due to come to an end on October 31, but has been extended until the beginning of December, following the announcement of a new four week national lockdown.

He added: “The payroll team did an absolutely fantastic job when the UK was first put into lockdown in March. The volume of calls and work they have dealt with since is mind blowing, as is their proactive and positive approach to work.

“Adding new recruits to the payroll team was a decision driven by demand and an ongoing need from our clients for support off a team with the right knowledge, along with strength in depth.

“I’m very pleased to see the latest members of the JF Hornby family are settling in well and getting along with their colleagues.

“We are now anticipating a fresh wave of calls for help, as businesses once again face a period of uncertainty. A spike in furloughed staff - along with the increased workload that brings for the team here - is a surety.”

The new team members are Mason Kelly, Lydia Hetherington and Richard Conway. They have joined the established payroll team of three which comprises Sarah Woodward, Charlotte Turner and Emma Dalton.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced the national lockdown in a televised press conference on Saturday.

It will close pubs, restaurants and non-essential shops from Thursday until 2 December, and people are advised to work from home if possible.

The revived furlough scheme will pay 80 per cent of an employee’s wages

Mr Johnson said: “I’m under no illusions about how difficult this will be for businesses which have already had to endure such hardship this year and I'm truly, truly sorry for that.

“And that's why we're going to extend the furlough system through November.

“The furlough scheme was a success in the spring, it supported people and businesses in a critical time.”
